We’ve just gotten dumped on with snow here in Virginia. As in we have three and four foot snow drifts in front of our house. With ice in between. We aren’t going anywhere for a while.
I decided to take this opportunity to dispel one of the many working mom myths I hear all the time:
Claim: Working from home is the perfect way to achieve work/life balance.
False.
Every time I hear women talking about their careers and their families, they all talk about working from home like it’s this magical solution to all of life’s problems. Like it is the perfect way to be the perfect mother and perfect employee, allowing you to truly have it al.
Ladies, this is what working from home on snow days really looks like.

There are times when I find myself feeling a little unfulfilled. Maybe you feel the same. I know something is off in my life, but what? When this feeling starts to creep into the pit of my stomach, I take a look back at my checklist for fulfillment, and sure enough, each time I’ve allowed myself to get too busy and have sacrificed some element of my life that makes me happy.
So for you dear friend, if you’re feeling a little unfulfilled or like something is off, take a look at your life recently. Identify some things that you can do THIS WEEK to make you feel more like a whole person. Maybe it’s more prayer time. Friend time. Exercise time. Volunteer time. Alone time. Husband time.
And if you’ve been feeling like you need a little more family time in your career, or a little more career in your family time, remember this: Working from home isn’t some kind of magical solution. The only real solution is knowing yourself, listening to yourself, and adjusting your life accordingly.
Now if you need me, I’ll be trying to untangle the wheels on my son’s Hungry Caterpillar toy from my unwashed hair, while mopping up melted snow from my kitchen floor. #livingthedream
